A Brief History of SLIPS - Bid, Challenge, Count
The Liar's Poker Slips app was inspired by a game we loved and played endlessly at Salomon Brothers through the late 80s and 90s. At the close of trading or on a slow day the call for "SLIPS" or "PLAYERS" rang out and participants would gather round, grab printed sheets of paper containing hands and attempt to outfox each other for fun and profit. No money changed hands, gains and losses were kept on a "Sheet" and settled annually at bonus time.
It all started innocently enough. The phone calls from the arb desk, once a week or so, "we need more Slips". Got the printer going, maybe 20 pages or so, and then on to the paper cutter, 4 cuts lengthwise yielding 5 slips of 10 hands each, 50 per page, totaling 1,000 hands. We later dispensed with the cutting and just delivered whole pages to save time. The appetite for Slips was ravenous. One year at Christmas time we got the printers going non-stop for a couple of weeks and delivered 4 cartons of paper stacked 3 1/2 feet high and weighing 200lbs onto John Meriwether's desk as a gift, 20,000 pages of printed Slips. Needless to say, they ran out before the next year was up!
Our group, the support staff, figured out the rules and started our own game. Not just in the office late into the night but on the subway on the way to dinners, after dinner, on the Staten Island Ferry, in the car, anywhere we could summon 3 or more players.
Long after the great times at Solly ended, we'd still get together for dinner and play Slips afterwards. More recently, with the advent of the app, everyone can play remotely or sit around a table (or both) and have a lot less overhead to deal with, paper and scoring wise. And you definitely don't have to be a quant anymore, an ability to read people is probably the key predictor of success.
