What is Liar's Poker?
Liar’s Poker is a strategic betting game where players infer the frequency of digits in the serial numbers of dollar bills, which serve as the hands. The game requires a blend of statistical reasoning, psychology, and bluffing, and is popular among Wall Street traders and other degenerate gamblers.
“Liar’s Poker” is also the name of a 1989 non-fiction memoir by Michael Lewis, chronicling his time as a young bond salesman at Salomon Brothers during the high-rolling, greed-driven culture of 1980s Wall Street. The book provides a raw, insider’s account of the financial world, detailing the excessive risk-taking and ambition that characterized the era. Lewis intended it as a cautionary tale, capturing the atmosphere of psychological warfare and immense wealth generation within the firm.
The title is derived from a variant of Liar’s Poker, a popular game incessantly played by the bond traders, including the top executives at the firm. The game serves as a central metaphor for the high-stakes risk inherent in the world of financial trading depicted in the book, perfectly encapsulating the swashbuckling spirit of Salomon Brothers and the markets it operated in.
With special rules they adopted the traders and others quickly became addicted to a game they simply referred to as LP or Slips. Play usually began after trading ended and often went on for hours on end. Instead of bills, since there clearly weren’t enough, they used printed sheets of paper containing randomly generated hands that mimicked the serial number on dollar bills, just like the sample sheet below.

Make a Bid, Challenge or Raise then Count, no tears! To keep things fair, ten hands make up a Slip. No one shot lucky strikes, players tough it out over ten rounds of play to see who’ll come out ahead. Stakes tend to vary from hand to hand and within the hand as well. If you’re behind after a few hands there’s time to play aggressively and come back or if you’re ahead an opportunity to consolidate or increase your gains. Didn’t do so hot? No worries, play another Slip!
Second Chance Bid: Option to count or raise once the first Bid is challenged around. Go to your real number or bluff?
Level/Value Driven Multiple: Bounty rises with Bid level and doubles on 6s. Fight or flight?
Carry over/Progression: Could increase the base stakes for the next hand. Gut check.
Final Hand Doubled: Last chance to make hay with higher stakes on the tenth and final hand
Automated Count: Watch as hands are revealed to see what everyone had and who won. Hold your breath!
Bid History, Sheet and Settlement: The ticker tape and the books, tracking play and everyone’s profit/loss
